Physical Characteristics
A familiar animal known to most people and certainly to children as a farmyard favourite, there is only one species of domestic horse, but around 400 different breeds within the species. Heights and sizes vary greatly between the breeds. Size: Height at the shoulders, 30 to 69 in (76 to 175 cm) Weight: 120 to 2,200 lbs.

Habitat
Groups of feral (wild) horses can be found in many places around the world. In Britain wild ponies can be seen roaming free on Dartmoor and Exmoor.

Behaviour
Wild horses generally gather in groups of 3 to 20 animals. A stallion (mature male) leads the group, which consists of mares (females) and young foals. When young males become colts, at around two years of age, the stallion drives them away. The colts then roam with other young males until they can gather their own band of females.

Breeding
Pregnancy in a mare is approximately 340 days. A newborn foal can stand up within an hour of being born and can keep up with the rest of the herd within 24 hours. The best time of year for a foal to be born is in the spring, when the weather is at its kindest and the lush grass is at its best for the nursing mares.

Diet
All horses are herbivorous grazers and can typically graze for up to 17 hours a day.

Strange and Interesting Facts
When a horse is born, its legs are almost their full adult length. A horse's teeth can be used to estimate its age. Horses cannot vomit.
