Physical Characteristics
With a distinctive reddy-orange coloured coat, the Red Fox is a familiar sight to most of us. The Fox sports a bushy tail that accounts for a third of its total length. A fox uses its tail or 'brush' as a warm cover in cold weather and as a way to communicate with other foxes. The average lifespan in the wild for a Fox is 2 to 4 years.

Habitat
The Red Fox has a range spanning most of North America and Eurasia, southern Australia, and with several populations in North Africa. Red foxes live in many diverse habitats including forests, grasslands, mountains, and deserts. They also adapt well to human environments such as farms and suburban areas.

Behaviour
The fox is a very social animal and is usually territorial. Urban dwelling Foxes are usually active at dusk and dawn, but in quiet areas and the countryside can be just as active during the day as in the night. More daytime activity increases as the mating season approaches.

Breeding
Red foxes breed once yearly. Often male and female foxes are monogamous, but males with multiple female mates are also known, as are male/female pairs that use non-breeding female helpers in raising their young. Females mated to the same male fox may share a den. Red fox groups always have only one breeding male, but that male may also seek mating outside of the group.

Diet
Red foxes are essentially omnivores and are solitary hunters who feed on rodents, rabbits, birds, and other small game, but their diet can be as flexible as their home habitat. Foxes will eat fruit and vegetables, fish, frogs and even worms. If living among humans, foxes will opportunistically dine on rubbish and pet food.

Foxes eyesight is generally considered to be poor and short-sighted.
