Physical Characteristics
The Holstein-Fresian Cow breed is the traditional black and white dairy cow. A Holstein cow usually has black ears, white feet and white end of the tail. Cows can live up to 25 years old. A mature Holstein cow weighs a massive 795kg and stands 130 cm (about 4.25 feet) tall at the shoulder.

Habitat
These cows are happiest when grazing in rich meadows.

Behaviour
Cows are herd animals who generally are gentle and alert.

Breeding
Modern Dairy cows are often bred using aritificial insemination and have a gestation period of 9 months. In order to keep producing milk, cows are impregnated in the third month after they have given birth to produce maximum milk yield.

Diet
Cows eat grass and hay mostly but supplements such as proteins are often given to aid milk production.

A Cow's lifetime milk production is around 26,000 litres!
