Physical Characteristics
The grizzly bear is a North American subspecies of the brown bear. Average lifespan in the wild: 25 years. Size: 5 to 8 ft (1.5 to 2.5 m) Weighing in at an average of 363 kg.

Habitat
Living in North America, gatherings of grizzly bears can be seen at prime Alaskan fishing spots when the salmon run upstream for summer spawning. Brown bears dig dens on north-facing slopes for their 5-8 month winter hibernation.

Behaviour
Bears are solitary animal - with the exception of females and their cub - but at certain times they do congregate for feeding. Despite their large size bears are quite fast and have been clocked running at 30 miles an hour. They can be dangerous to humans, particularly if surprised or if a human come between a mother and her cubs. Bears may enter human territory looking for food and hikers have to be very careful not to store food where they sleep to avoid direct confrontation with wild bears.

Breeding
The bear mating season is early May through mid-July and the young (usually twins) are born in January or February while the mothers are hibernating in their den. Cubs will remain with their mothers for at least 2 - 4 years.

Diet
Grizzly bears are powerful, top-of-the-food-chain predators, yet much of their diet consists of nuts, berries, fruit, leaves, and roots. However as an Omnivore, bears do also eat other animals, from rodents to moose. During the Salmon spawning season, dozens of bears may gather to feast on the fish, craving fats that will sustain them through the long winter ahead.

Strange and Interesting Facts
The grizzly bear gets its name from the greyish or grizzled tips of its fur. Yogi Bear is probably one of the best known brown bears in the world.
