Physical Characteristics
Ferrets normally live for 5-11 years, grow to up to 60cm in length and weigh up to 2kg. There are 7 main colour types of ferret; Sable, Albino, Cinnamon, Panda, Blaze or Badger, Silver and Siamese.

Habitat
Ferrets are found in topographical regions such as plains, forests, mountains, farms, deserts, tundra, grasslands, and other bushy areas, but you can often find them anywhere that their prey lives.

Behaviour
Ferrets are energetic, curious, interested in their surroundings, and often actively solicit play with humans, having a repertoire of behaviors both endearing and difficult for some human owners. Ferrets spend 14 to 18 hours a day sleeping and are naturally crepuscular. They usually sleep in six hour sections. When ferrets are excited, they may perform a routine commonly referred to as the weasel war dance, a frenzied series of sideways hops. This is sometimes accompanied by a soft clucking noise, commonly referred to as dooking, and is often an invitation to play!

Breeding
Ferrets' gestation period lasts for about 41 days, giving birth to litters of about 8-10 kits normally. The kits are weaned between 8 and 10weeks old. Ferret kits are white, and are born deaf. They don't begin to hear until they are 34 days old, the same time that their eyes open.

Diet
Ferrets are obligate carnivores. The natural diet consists of whole small prey, i.e., meat, organs, bones, skin, feathers, and fur.

Strange and Interesting Facts
The name "ferret" is derived from the Latin furittus, meaning "little thief", a likely reference to the common ferret penchant for secreting away small items. A newborn ferret is so small that it can fit into a teaspoon!
